VOINews, Jakarta: Russian President Vladimir Putin extended congratulations to Donald Trump on his re-election as President of the United States, signaling Russia’s openness to renewed dialogue under Trump’s leadership. Speaking at the Valdai International Discussion Club, Putin expressed optimism about collaborating to address global issues, including the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

"I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate him [Trump] on his re-election as the president of the United States," Putin said, as reported by Sputnik on Saturday. Putin acknowledged Trump’s willingness to restore relations with Russia, particularly in efforts toward conflict resolution in Ukraine, emphasizing that such intentions warrant serious consideration from Moscow.

The Russian leader reiterated his stance on respecting the democratic choice of American voters and expressed a commitment to work with any U.S. leader elected by the American people. "I have always said that we will work with whoever is chosen by the American people. This will be demonstrated in practice," Putin stated.

Putin also remarked on his personal approach to contacting Trump, noting he has no reservations about doing so, though he hasn't yet initiated any direct communication. He reflected on the fluctuating nature of contact with Western leaders, which at one point included frequent weekly calls but later saw a sudden halt. “If they don’t want contact, that’s fine. As you can see, we are still here, alive and well, progressing and moving forward,” he added.

The Russian President also made note of his willingness to re-engage if Western leaders sought to renew discussions, reiterating, “If anyone wants to resume contact, I have always said and will say again that we have no problem with that; we will continue contact and hold discussions.”

Furthermore, Putin commended Trump’s resilience in the face of a recent assassination attempt during his campaign, calling him courageous and capable under extraordinary circumstances. “In extraordinary situations, one proves oneself. Trump demonstrated bravery and conduct fitting of a leader," Putin noted.

In discussing Trump’s political career, Putin reflected on the challenges Trump faced during his first term, observing that the former U.S. president was often “cornered and restricted from all sides,” which limited his actions and movement within the political landscape.

As Trump enters his final term, Putin remarked, "I don’t know what will happen now; I have no predictions. For Trump, this will be his last term, so what he chooses to do is a question for himself," leaving Trump’s next moves open to speculation.ANTARA/VOI
