The Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry has organized technical training on converting fossil based-motorbikes into electric ones for the first batch of 22 Jakarta residents.

"The use of private vehicles is one of the contributors to the (high) consumption of fossil fuels, which increases emissions and has a negative impact on health and the environment," Head of the ministry’s Center for Human Resources Development (PPSDM) for Electricity, New Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation (KEBTKE) Susetyo Edi Prabowo said.

He made the statement while opening the training, according to a press release received from the ESDM Ministry on Saturday.

According to Prabowo, an energy transition policy has been issued to replace fossil energy with new and renewable energy (EBT) in stages, with EBT use targeted to be pushed up to 23 percent by 2025.

The training organized by the ministry is being held from January 24–31, 2023, at the PPSDM for KEBTKE campus, in collaboration with the Center for Survey and Testing (BBSP) for KEBTKE.

The implementation of the motorbike conversion training is also aimed at realizing Indonesia's commitment to cutting carbon emissions by 29 percent by 2030, since it is expected to bolster the energy transition effort by increasing the number of electric vehicles (EVs).

"Motorcycles are one of the targets of the electric vehicle conversion program, considering that motorbikes are the mainstay of mobility for the Indonesian people because of their accessibility and affordability,” Prabowo stated.

He emphasized that the implementation of the conversion program will pay attention to the performance and quality of the vehicles so that they are still suitable for everyday use.

Hence, to make the electric motorbike conversion program a success, the ESDM Ministry is carrying out the training, he added.

"It is expected that this series of (training) activities can generate reliable human resources in carrying out fuel-based motorbikes into electric motorbikes conversion," he said.

Currently, the government is designing a policy regarding an incentive mechanism for people who purchase EVs, with a total incentive value of Rp5 trillion.

Through the Industry Ministry, incentives will be distributed to the community via four schemes: Rp80 million will be provided to people buying electric cars, Rp40 million to those purchasing hybrid-based electric cars, Rp8 million for two-wheeled vehicles, and Rp5 million for motorcycles that are converted into electric motorcycles.  (antaranews)
